In his youth, he spent much time in the Carnegie Library in Waukegan, reading such authors as H. Bradbury began writing his own stories at age 12 (1931), sometimes writing on butcher paper. Throughout his youth, Bradbury was an avid reader and writer and knew at a young age that he was "going into one of the arts". Bradbury's first pay as a writer, at age 14, was for a joke he sold to George Burns to use on the Burns and Allen radio show. Among the creative and talented people he met were special-effects pioneer Ray Harryhausen and radio star George Burns. He often roller-skated through Hollywood in hopes of meeting celebrities. The family arrived with only US$40 (equivalent to $875 in 2022), which paid for rent and food until his father finally found a job making wire at a cable company for $14 a week (equivalent to $306 in 2022), allowing them to stay in Hollywood.īradbury attended Los Angeles High School and was active in the drama club. Additionally, Bradbury wrote poetry and published several collections of his poems, such as They Have Not Seen the Stars (2001). Many of his works were adapted into television and film productions as well as comic books. He also wrote and consulted on screenplays and television scripts, including Moby Dick and It Came from Outer Space. Most of his best known work is speculative fiction, but he also worked in other genres, such as the coming of age novel Dandelion Wine (1957) and the fictionalized memoir Green Shadows, White Whale (1992). īradbury wrote many works and is widely known by the general public for his novel Fahrenheit 451 (1953) and his short-story collections The Martian Chronicles (1950) and The Illustrated Man (1951). But in that moment, Hollis’s jealousy evaporates as he realizes that they share the same fate. Hollis had always been jealous of Lespere his confidence, promiscuity, riches. Lespere is proud of the life he has led and is not afraid to die. The other men keep chattering Lespere goes on and on bragging about his multiple wives on multiple planets. He is able to twist his suit and he ties off the sleeve to seal the leak. Hollis is then struck by a meteor and loses his left hand. Applegate gets on the radio again and begins releasing his fury against the Captain and Hollis. Hollis then punches the visor of the man’s helmet, thus relieving him of the infinitely worse death from a meteor strike or plummet to the moon or Earth. Hollis notices one of them floating nearby, and he reaches out and grabs the man. Two of the men suddenly begin to scream relentlessly.
